An extremely rare hemiobol from the mysterious 'Breig...'
Lot 72
BRUTTIUM. Breig…. Circa 340-320 BC. Hemiobol (?) (Bronze, 18 mm, 3.79 g, 6 h), struck at Metapontion (?). ΤΡΑΕΣ Forepart of the river-god Traes, in the form of a man-headed bull, to right; to left, K. Rev. ΒΡΕ[Ι]Γ Ear of barley with leaf to right; to right, dolphin to left and plow. Attianese 2. HN Italy 2678. Extremely rare and of great interest. The obverse struck slightly off center and a break in patina on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

Ex Münzen & Medaillen GmbH 17, 4 October 2005, 97 (with original ticket) and ex Numismatica Ars Classica 8, 3 April 1995, 450.

This enigmatic issue was likely struck in Metapontion for a nearby settlement of the Brettii. The river-god's name, which appears to read Traes, refers to the Trionto river, indicating that Breig... was located somewhere in the stream's vicinity.
